One of my favourite things about magazines is the last editorial page before the back cover. Some mags nail this, others not so much! At Australian House & Garden we end with a fun page called “Things that make us smile.” Lots of fashion mags end with “What’s in your handbag, “What would you take to a deserted island,” or my personal favourite “10 things you can’t live without.”
Believe it or not there is method to this madness. You’d be surprised at the number of people who actually read a magazine back to front, so the back page always has to be eye-catching. Think about when you’re standing in line in the supermarket and you pick up a glossy. You often will have a quick flip from the back without even thinking about it.
One of the most fun things about my job as Senior Stylist for AH&G is contributing to this page. It’s a place to pool all the great items, including great gifts, that have come across our radar that month. There's often great gifts and gift ideas that perhaps don’t fit into another category in the magazine - but stand out as something special.
So with that in mind, for this post I decided to do something similar. This is a list of my top 10 Gifts at the moment. These are Gifts (I'd love to get!) or things I’m coveting, travel destinations, lifestyle, books etc. I’ll put together one of these lists every now and then and hopefully it will spark some creative inspiration in you. And as nice as it is to receive Gifts like these, it's just as amazing to gift someone you love!
Cire Trudon candles are my absolute favourite. The rich coloured glass and gold foil emblem embody perfect packaging and with scents titled Ernesto and Nazareth you just know they are going to smell delicious. Always a perfect Gift. From $131, Net-a-Porter; www.net-a-porter.com.
We all know women love their handbags and the latest from Chloe is sure to be a favourite. Picking up on the fringing trend that we’re seeing at the moment, the Hudson bag in caramel is high on my wish list - or an amazing gift from your Collective? $2995, Parlour X; www.parlourx.com.
I have been working on a shoot for AH&G at the moment and am finding a lot of great inspiration from American designer Nancy Braithwaite. She does classic country like no other and has a way of making a monochrome scheme seem soft and lived in. Her book Simplicity is a lovely gift or addition to your coffee table, $75, The Design Hunter; www.thedesignhuntershop.com.
Tyrone Lane is one of Sydney’s most exciting new artists. His exhibition Bankers, Lawyers and Beachbums featured recently at Saint Cloche Gallery in Paddington. And his work is also included in their current Pret-A-Paws exhibition (...but hurry, as exhibition closes 28 June). Tyrone's detail and perspective is captivating and his look into the different areas of Sydney and the people who visit these areas is fascinating. I love how he captures the moments and interactions of people with their pets! Another favourite is Paddington Public School’s Class Trip to the City (2015-16), $1800, Saint Cloche; www.saintcloche.com.
Olive Branches. I feel like I needn’t say more. They are the most beautiful foliage and when put in the home they give the space a European feel. I always say flowers are a luxury, but foliage is a must.
Articolo are a Melbourne-based lighting company that have glass blowing down to a fine art. Their latest Eclipse collection of wall sconces have got me swooning. From $1458/ea; www.articoloarchitecturallighting.com.au.
Travel is a must for me. Not only does it give you a break from everyday life but it sparks inspiration too! It gets you out of your comfort zone, allows you to try new things, relax and experience different cultures. For me there is no other place quite like the island of Capri, Italy. The water of the Mediterranean, the fresh seafood, the relaxed Italian lifestyle. It's bliss. Book your custom travel experience with www.wentworthtravel.com.au.
Speaking of the Mediterranean…I have been wearing this perfume for nearly 10 years now! Frederic Malle creates the ultimate in sophisticated scents and Edouard Fléchier’s Lys Méditerranée is addictive. Treat yourself with this perfect gift. $220/50mL, Mecca Cosmetica;www.mecca.com.au
The Country Trader is one of my favourite shops. Every item in there is exceptional and has been hand selected. The result being a treasure trove of the most beautiful antiques, art and decorative pieces www.thecountrytrader.com.au.
